Review:

Water is the alter ego of the Backbeat Beatles, so do the tracks on their new CD "Rainmaker" betray an influence by the fab foursome? You betcha they do! I wouldn't want you to think they were just being fab wannabes though as this is not the case. They take nuances of the Beatles both as a group and individual performers and use them to blend with their own lyrical and melodic talents to create a CD of interesting listening.

There's a heavy leaning towards the McCartney-esque with a melodic Wings style feel peppered with Harrison guitar stylings and the occasional acidic Lennon vocalisations. Some nits are also reminiscent of some of Neil Innes' more thoughtful work, with "Do You Get It" raising comparisons with "Questionnaire." All this leads to an album with a retro-feel but tempered with a hint of popular modern guitar bands. Highlights for me are "Sunday Afternoon" which a Macca sound with a seasoning of Kinks, "Do You Get It," "Black Elvis" both of which feature clever lyrics and the title track "Rainmaker."

On the whole the CD is very palatable, it may not be one I'd play constantly but it will be being played more than once or twice!
