From the Santa Cruz Sentinel: Dossier on ... Rubber Revolver The group began as a vision, a dream to put together a team of top musicians to perform the Beatles’ White Album live, with lights, dance and a full-screen video presentation. The show gained popularity around town through word of mouth, and the group decided to continue to perform. After selling out several shows, the White Album Ensemble decided to add another show, Rubber Revolver, performing the Beatles’ "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" albums, along with four other singles that were released concurrently: "We Can Work It Out," "Day Tripper," "Rain" and "Paperback Writer." Today, the WAE consists of Jason Schimmel, Tiran Porter, Dale Ockerman, Ken Kraft, Alan Heit, Michael Daugherty, Bob Bliss and Richard Bryant. The White Album Ensemble guys don’t consider themselves a tribute band but rather compare their aims to that of a symphony performing Bach or Mozart. For this weekend’s performances of Rubber Revolver, the White Album Ensemble will be joined by musician Barry Phillips, who will assist with string arrangements and play tamboura. Phillips is the cellist for Ravi Shankar and has played with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton at the Concert for George (Harrison). Also joining WAE will be Ernie Baber on sitar and Steve Robertson on tablas, as well as Timb Harris, Barry Phillips, Mirandi Hostetter and Chad Kaltinger as a string quartet. The White Album Ensemble will be performing Rubber Revolver at the Henry J. Mello Center for the Performing Arts, East Beach and Lincoln streets, Watsonville, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Watsonville Charter School of the Arts.
