Liverpool Beatleweek Appearances: 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004

Biography:

Last year at Beatleweek a name you couldn't go very far without hearing was Gavin Pring. Playing fourteen gigs in three different guises he covered an awful lot of ground and won audiences over with his natural wit and charm (Well he is from Liverpool so what did you expect?).

Gav celebrated George Harrison's solo career by recreating 'The Rock Legends Tour' of 1991 in Chavasse Park on the Saturday. Having put 'George Harry's Son' together before he left Liverpool to work with British Export in Chicago, they only had two full rehearsals prior to stepping out in front of the Beatleweek crowd. Nonetheless they performed a memorable set, one of the highlights being their blistering rendition of 'Isn't It A Pity'. Word obviously travelled amongst the revellers in Liverpool, resulting in a capacity crowd to see 'George Harry's Son' in the Cavern on Monday. On the strength of those two concerts and the audience's obvious delight, 'George Harry's Son' will be making a welcome return to Beatleweek this year albeit with a slightly different line-up. They will be playing three gigs to provide more George solo music, a few surprises, lots of laughs and probably a few tears. Their showcase gig in the Adelphi Ballroom on Monday night promises to be something special and one not to be missed.

In 'George Harry's Son' this year Gav is once again joined by guitarist Richard Smith, who wowed audiences with his unique style of playing and superb slide guitar. Richie 'the Sticks', as he is known, is still providing the steady beat, and Kate Cave will once again be providing backing vocals alongside a new addition to the band Paula McCool. On keyboards this year is John, and helping out on bass a new, but familiar face in the line-up is Gav's fellow British Export member Paul Lynch.

Hot on the heels of his success in the park, Gav provided the George content at Saturday evenings 'Unplugged'. Forget 'Hell's Kitchen', The American Bar was certainly the hottest place in town that night. Few of those who witnessed the gig will forget the roar that greeted Gav's rendition of 'The Pirate Song', the first time it had ever been performed at Beatleweek. By including 'The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea', he became the first Beatleweek artist to cover a track from George's latest album 'Brainwashed'. He took us on an emotional roller coaster, making us smile by encouraging audience participation, and urging those who hadn't already done so to go out and buy 'Brainwashed' "because it is a great album", making us cry by including a verse of rewritten lyrics in 'Here Comes The Sun', part of a heartfelt tribute he had penned to George. It was obvious to all watching, that Gav was loving every minute, even refusing to be phased when British Export's, Jim 'Ringo' Martin put him on the spot by introducing one of his original compositions. He rose to the challenge admirably, and the following morning many a convention goer could be heard humming 'The Washing Up Song'.

Not content with celebrating solo George, Gav gave us 'Beatle George', with British Export: recreating the early years and delivering songs like 'Sheik of Araby' with a cheeky twinkle in his eye. The rapport on stage with the rest of the band and the energy exuded by all of them left the audiences yelling for more.

To say last year was a busy Beatleweek for Gav is something of an understatement and this years looks like being another whirlwind, with thirteen gigs scheduled at the time of writing. Since last year's Beatleweek Gav has been busy working with British Export, not only fitting in another tour of South Korea but also appearing on several American television programmes when the 40th Anniversary of the Beatles first US visit was celebrated earlier this year. He has enjoyed another busy summer in America, culminating in Abbey Road on the River in Cleveland where he performed with Tim Piper and Beatleweek favourite Lawrence Macca in the Fantasy Reunion concert as well as gigs with British Export, and as himself with his much talked about celebration of George's solo work. Following on directly from his success there, Gav is returning to his native Liverpool to perform at his fourth consecutive Beatleweek. He will be in The Cavern Pub on Thursday afternoon to welcome early arrivals to Beatleweek. Joined by Paul Lynch they will perform an acoustic gig that centres on the solo work of Harrison and McCartney with a few surprises thrown in.

You'd think that was enough for most people but Gav is a talented musician in his own right, playing a range of instruments and writing his own songs. Recently he has been busy recording his original material and his debut CD will be available soon.
