Beatles Festival Appearances: Liverpool Beatle Week 2001, 2002, 2006
Biography: (from the Beatle Week 2002 Programme)
It’s been quite a year for The Blue Meanies! Since their debut at Beatle Week last August they’ve become one of the most talked about Beatles Tribute Bands in the UK. Their weekly shows at Mathew Street’s Baty’s is drawing a bigger crowd than ever, and in February, they achieved the ultimate accolade… appearing on the same stage as a former-Beatle! They were so desperate to perform at the George Harrison Tribute Concert at the Liverpool Empire, that they turned up at the theatre during rehearsals and begged to be allowed to play. They were eventually given a two-number spot, after The Merseybeats, but calls for an encore from the audience meant they actually got to play three songs. Of course, rumours had been rife all weekend that Paul McCartney might show his face, but it wasn’t until the interval that the rumours were confirmed and the man arrived. I was sat in the second row, and my friends and I knew that Macca was ‘in the house’ when Tony and Jimmy came out to help hand over a cheque to the Macmillan hospice. The money had been raised at a tribute to George at the Cavern Club in December, at which the Blue Meanies, Hare Georgeson, The Flying Postmen and Instant Karma had performed. Carrying their guitars, we couldn’t help but recognise the fresh autograph on their scratchplates as belonging to one Sir Paul! And then of course he turned up on stage, following the wonderful ‘all-cast’ version of My Sweet Lord (complete with members of the London Hare Krishna Temple), and sang, unaccompanied, a very moving and heartfelt rendition of Yesterday. Everyone rejoined him onstage for a final curtain call, the Meanies ensuring they made almost every photograph by standing alongside their hero; who seemed equally pleased to be there, lending his support to such an emotional evening.
The Blue Meanies are brothers Tony (Paul) and Jimmy (John) Coburn, Gavin Pring (George) and Stuart Simpson (Ringo).
