Hare Georgeson @ The Barcelona, Liverpool. August 25th 2000
The Beatling got underway for real on Friday afternoon when 3 bands took to the stage at The Barcelona. Liverpool from Sweden, Banned On The Run and Hare Georgeson saw to it that Convention 2000 began with a bang!!
Rick Alan is fab as George. A lifelong Beatlefan he and his band perform the lesser-heard songs of George Harrison (not that their name gives it away!). Along with Banned On The Run, Liverpool, Gary Gibson, Instant Karma and Johnny Silver they ensure that the solo work of the fab four is also embraced, and they perform songs which fans would otherwise never be able to hear live.
Hare Georgeson opened with 'Got My Mind Set On You' and continued with all our 'Quiet One' favourites: 'Taxman'; 'Someplace Else'; 'Old Brown Shoe'; and the fab 'What is Life'. The band were all excellent - Paul Kappa (guitar), Pete Muldoon (bass), the fantastic Roy Hitchen (aka 'Bootleg Keith Moon')(drums), Eddie Whelan (keyboards) and Paula Wildman (backing vocals).
They finished the set with 'My Sweet Lord' but we wanted more! The inevitable song was 'While My Guitar', but Liverpool had already played it in the opening set. But Rick took the risk and the familiar riff began!! What a great version - the guitar solo in the middle really gives lead guitarists the chance to show us what they can do, and they all seem to do something a bit different! It was brilliant!! We were left wanting even more and thankfully Banned On The Run were at the side of the stage waiting to come on…otherwise I think we could've kept Hare Georgeson playing all night!!
